What Is an ASN? (And Why Should You Care?)
At its core, the internet is a vast network of networks. Each large network, such as an internet service provider (ISP), cloud provider, or hosting company, operates as an autonomous system (AS) meaning it controls its own internal routing and policies.
To connect these systems together, the global internet uses Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs), which are unique identifiers that allow networks to exchange routing information through a system called BGP (Border Gateway Protocol).
Without an ASN, hosting companies typically depend on upstream providers to manage routing, IP announcements, and peering relationships. But by becoming an ASN holder, ScaleFair now manages these directly – giving us complete control over how traffic enters and leaves our network.
